Microsoft Introduces Text Analytics for Health To Extract Insights from Unstructured Medical Data

Text Analytics helps organizations obtain insights from their health data.

Today we will talk about a new service that Microsoft just introduced. The service is Text Analytics for Health. It is a service for the healthcare industry, and it promises to help analyze the extensive data that the industry has.  

The majority of the healthcare industry data comes in the form of unstructured text. This unstructured text can be doctor's notes, medical publications, electronic health records, clinical trial protocols, medical transcripts, among others.

It's not easy for healthcare organizations and pharmaceutical companies to identify and obtain insights from all of this information. Despite being hard, it's necessary for them, as they can understand better what's going on by analyzing their input data. Once insights are unlocked, there is a huge potential for improving healthcare services.  

Text Analytics for health Is a new preview feature of Text Analytics that works in Azure Cognitive Services. It enables developers to process and extract information from unstructured medical data.

Developers spend their time efficiently 

Developers don't have to spend time building models, in this case, the service is already developed and ready to be used. Healthcare organizations don't have to spend time on configuration or manual tasks.

When using Text Analytics, there are word detection algorithms that help the user do relationships so unstructured text entities that belong to the healthcare and biomedical domain. Some word examples are the diagnosis, medication names, symptoms, examinations, treatments, dosages, and others.  

The Analytics also relate connections between concepts in the text, for example, Medication names and dosages associated with the medication. It's called the Unified Medical Language System. 

Medical content is affected by the modifiers. One of the most important things for healthcare professionals is to determine when a patient has not been diagnosed with something but has a certain symptom. It's the moment when the potential is transformed into action. 

Text Analytics for health enables researchers, data analysts, and medical professionals to successfully produce analytics on medical data and create prediction models that match patients' needs.

Due to the Covid-19, Microsoft partnered with the Allen Institute for AI. They together work by preparing the Covid-19 Open Research Dataset. It counts with over 47,000 scholarly articles by the global research community.

Covid-19 Search Engine

Using Cognitive Search and Text Analytics, the Covid-19 search engine has been developed. It helps researchers evaluate and gain insights from information quickly and efficiently.  

Microsoft has also partnered with the EPPI-Centre´s Reviews Facility, in the department of Health located in England. They together built a living review system. A system that automatically identifies relevant research for reviews as they are published, on-demand.  

Microsoft publicly aims in the healthcare industry to empower people and organizations that are addressing complex challenges in today´s industry. Microsoft is working with multiple organizations that have direct access to a large number of customers.

Text Analytics is currently available in containers. By using containers you can deploy resources in your development environment, meeting your specific security and data governance demands. The container also provides REST Query prediction endpoint APIs.
