Today we will talk about some tips that you can use to begin your freelance career. As we know, it´s not easy to leave job security behind. But who doesn't risk doesn't win.

It may be comfortable and nice to have a safe job, but nothing ever grows in the comfort zone. If you find yourself in a routine job, where you are not growing, you might want to consider starting a freelance career. You can also start your freelancer career part-time, without leaving your main job.

The world needs programmers and it will need even more with time. You will find something to work on if you are employed or if you are a freelancer. Freelancer comes with many perks. Managing your time, charging per hour or per project, being able to work remotely, among other benefits.

Following next, I will describe how you can become a good standing freelance programmer. There are 7 tips that if you follow, you will be on the right track to be able to work independently.

1.    Build your reputation

What makes you stand out? Why should a person hire you and not another person? These kinds of questions answer about what you have to do. We all have something that makes us different from the other person. Both in our personality and our skills. Recognize what makes you unique and go all-in for that trait. Do your best to empower your image and your presentation.

Make sure to build a solid reputation on social media and on the web. We live in a world where freelancers are hired on freelancer websites or found through social media. Have accounts in the best platforms, Impactian, Toptal, Upwork, and others.

2.    Be re-employed.

Most freelancers build relationships with the agency, company, or person that hires them. Be able to sharpen your social skills and to deliver your services as expected. Deliver your service within the due date and with good quality. Chances are, if you do this, you will be surely called back for more work.

3.    Choose a niche

Whether you are a front-end programmer, a back-end programmer, or a full-stack programmer, make sure to specialize in one niche. It is better to make yourself a name in a certain service than to cover lots of services but have no reputation. It's better to do more work based on a specific skill. Always show your entire skillset, but try to work for one kind of service and you will achieve a good status in the freelancing pages in the short term.

4.    Have strong skills

Working as a freelancer doesn't mean you don't have to know all the languages because you specialize in one. You never know if you are going to need other languages to complement a certain development or if you want to offer different services. Make sure to have a strong skill-set and you will be right on track.

5.    Work on open-source projects

This tip is based on two factors. Firstly, if you are a programmer, make sure to belong to a community where you can use your skills to improve a certain platform. Open-source technology is the future of development. And secondly and most importantly regarding freelancing, make sure to expose your open-source contributions as it is well seen by people that hire freelancers.

6.    Do content marketing

In the freelancing world, your best advertising is promoting yourself in the best way. You can promote yourself with paid advertising in social media and Google ads, but the best way you can do is to become a premium member in freelancer platforms. It's the best-spent capital that will help you be found and discovered. The price-benefit relationship is positive.

7.    Set personal rules

Set your schedule and your pay rate. You are the one offering the services, you are the one in charge. You can always negotiate terms with people who are hiring, but don't set your profile to an "open to discussion" scenario. Instead, set public hourly prices and estimated time frames for each project that is presented. Always set your terms and conditions before starting to work on a project.

In conclusion, working as a freelancer allows you to have flexibility, time management, independence, and become your boss. You can make the jump into freelancing if you feel you are not growing enough in your employed job, or you can be a part-time freelancer. Freelancing allows you to build your brand and it has the potential of becoming an agency. Many freelancers become known and start hiring other freelancers because of the high demand they get. Make sure to follow the 7 tips, and you will surely be successful in your freelancer career.
